I’m Xin Zhang, a researcher and interaction designer working across HCI, immersive technologies, eye tracking, and digital health.

About

My work sits between interaction design and empirical HCI research.

My academic path began in animation and visual design, where I became interested in how composition, movement, and spatial experience shape the way people perceive and engage with digital environments. During my M.S. training in Information and Interaction Design, that interest developed into a research focus on immersive interaction and digital health.

I now work across the full research process: identifying an interaction problem, designing and developing the VR system, planning the experiment, collecting user data, and evaluating the system through behavioral, psychological, qualitative, and physiological measures. I am especially interested in cases where the input modality changes the task itself—for example, when gaze becomes a means of selection, attention support, or visual training rather than simply a signal recorded for later analysis.

Across my recent projects, I have explored eye-controlled VR mindfulness, gaze-mediated fall-prevention training for older adults, restorative virtual environments, and AI-assisted embodied art therapy. Although the application areas differ, they share a common question: how can interactive systems respond to human attention, movement, and internal state in ways that are useful, understandable, and appropriate to the activity?

For doctoral research, I hope to continue working at the intersection of HCI, immersive technologies, and health, particularly gaze-aware interaction, adaptive VR/XR, healthy ageing, digital therapeutics, and multimodal evaluation.

Research Approach

I use design to formulate questions, and experiments to test what the design actually changes.

Frame the interaction problem

I begin with a behavior or experience the interface should support: returning attention, recognizing environmental risk, maintaining visual stability, or expressing emotion through movement and image-making.

Build the interaction

I translate the research question into a functioning immersive system. Dwell duration, feedback timing, task progression, error recovery, and the relationship between input and response become explicit design decisions.

Evaluate beyond usability

I combine behavioral evidence with psychological outcomes, interviews, and physiological measures when relevant, so the evaluation can address not only whether a system is usable, but also what it changes and why.

A gaze-mediated VR training system for older adults. LumaStep combines realistic hazard-search tasks with gaze-stabilization training to examine whether visual training and eye-controlled interaction can contribute to balance- and fall-related outcomes.

An eye-controlled VR mindfulness system that provides feedback when attention moves away from the intended meditation anchor. The study compares visual and body-focused anchors and evaluates psychological outcomes together with workload and prefrontal activity.

An art-therapy study that moves repeatedly between hand drawing, bodily movement, and AI-generated imagery. Instead of treating generated images as final outputs, each transformation becomes material for the participant’s next visual and bodily response.
